Mr Machinegun… or how to turn a company around

Some people we meet mark us for life. I’ll never forget one exceptional person who contacted me a few years ago. He worked for a European company making specialized industrial tape. He had been the company’s CFO but had revealed himself to have a special talent in turning around their several underperforming divisions around the world. He loved his job which he likened to gardening: clearing out the weeds so that the remaining plants could grow properly.

And that is what he’d just done with his Canadian-based tape manufacturing plant. He told me he had just fired more than half of the senior management and several middle managers too. So I asked him why he wanted to talk with me. He said that, having passed his machinegun through the company, that was only half the job, in fact it was the simplest part. Now he had to manage the survivors. This was not his specialty, he was much more effective at weeding than at fertilizing the remaining plants, so this is where me and my associates could help him.

So, we ran a Human Synergistics organizational culture survey and brought the management team, including ‘Mr Machinegun’ together for an offsite program where they did a survival simulation, a team effectiveness profile and then received the results of their organizational culture survey. Then we coached them on their individual 360° leadership profiles.

The results were very interesting. One or two members of the management team decided to leave after getting their individual leadership profile results. They realized they were not a fit for the style of leadership that ‘Mr Machinegun’ was building. But the others stayed on and turned the Canadian plant around in less than 18 months. Indeed it became the company’s top-performing division three years in a row.
