According to a study by the Harvard Kennedy School, the key competency demonstrated by effective managers is their ability to assign the most appropriate people to the tasks they are most suited to, monitor their performance, reassign them as needed and keep them motivated.

Self-Actualizing: the ability to translate upper management’s vision into meaningful strategies at the department or service level and communicate these strategies in an enthusiastic, motivating way.

 

Humanistic: the ability to effectively listen to team members and to provide them with frequent opportunities to continue their self development.

 

Achievement: the ability to formulate and negotiate tough but realistic objectives and then to give team members the autonomy to achieve them in their own way.

 

Affiliative: the ability to encourage effective cross-disciplinary team work and ensure that good performance is rapidly recognized and rewarded.
